    17. August 1999 - Park Ridge, New Jersey - Sony Electronics Inc. today announced Cyber-shot Pro digital still camera, a full-featured mega-pixel digital still camera at a breakthrough price for professional-grade cameras. Available now, the new digital camera, model DSC-D770, incorporates performance features found only in a professional single-lens-reflex (SLR) camera. Key features of the Cyber-shot Pro camera include:

    • Five times manual optical zoom lens with manual focus
    • Optical, through-lens-viewfinder with 2.5" LCD
    • Wide variety of manual operations, to meet professionals' needs, such as exposure control and manual focus ring to allow a more accurate feel
    • Progressive-scan half-inch 1.5 million-pixel CCD with up to 1344 x 1024 image resolution
    • A histogram function that allows users to check the distribution of brightness levels once a picture is taken in the LCD or on a video monitor
    • A guide line function with top and bottom markers to give the photographer lines for portrait or landscape image framing
    • Fast, continuous shooting and quick operation.

"Both professionals and consumers now can own a high-quality camera at a price well within reach," said Jay Sato, vice president of digital imaging products and services marketing for Sony Electronics. "Professionals will find the manual operation, performance capabilities and flexibility that digital photography offers, and photo enthusiasts will appreciate the easy-to-use features."

The camera's many professional-grade manual features give photographers ample flexibility to control and compose their pictures just the way they desire. The range of these manual features includes: a 5x manual optical zoom lens (equivalent to an f=28-140mm on a 35mm camera) with built in macro capability, mechanical shutter, white balance control, ISO setting and TIFF file format.

The exposure control gives the user four option modes for creative control over each image. With programmed auto exposure (AE) mode, the camera selects the best aperture and shutter speed for a given scene. In aperture priority AE mode, the user selects the f-stop for creative control of depth of field. In shutter priority AE mode, the user selects the shutter speed to capture crystal clear images of fast-moving subjects. The manual setting allows the user control over both the iris and the shutter speed. In manual mode, shutter speeds can be adjusted from four seconds to 1/2000th of a second and the iris can be adjusted from f2 to f11.

Like a professional 35mm camera, the DSC-D770 camera has an optical through-the-lens viewfinder to allow for accurate framing and focusing in all lighting conditions. A 2.5-inch color LCD also can be used as a viewfinder and for playback of stored images for in-field editing.

In addition, the camera has many other professional-level features. It offers selectable center-weighted or spot metering system for accurate exposure, both mechanical and electronic shutters for the best possible image quality, and EV compensation for user control over minor exposure adjustments.

The DSC-D770 saves and transfers digital images in both JPEG compressed and TIFF non-compressed formats. Images are transferred to a PC through an industry standard PCMCIA ATA Type II memory card, or with Memory Stick (8MB Memory Stick supplied) and a supplied high transfer speed PCMCIA ATA Type II card adapter.

Memory Stick storage media is an ultra-compact storage and transfer media from Sony, designed to interface with a number of consumer electronic products. The 32MB Memory Stick has more than 20 times the storage capacity of a standard 3.5" 1.44MB floppy disk. Memory Stick is available in 4, 8, 16MB capacities and 32MB Memory Stick will be available in October.

The DSC-D770 comes with a supplied 8MB Memory Stick and a PCMCIA adapter card, model MSAC-PC2, for quick image transfers to any laptop. The PC card adapter has fast read and write speed, allowing users to transfer or save high resolution images in seconds (450Kb/s write and 880 Kb/s read speeds). The MSAC-PC2 PC card adapter will be available as a separate accessory

The Cyber-shot Pro is also supplied with a parallel port adapter, model MSAC-PR1, for easy transfer of Memory Stick images to a desktop PC.

Powered with a rechargeable battery, the camera includes a built-in pop-up flash. It also is equipped with a hot shoe for external flash attachments or adapters for triggering professional studio lighting.
